61 YEARS OLD KNOCK DOWN 2 POLICE OFFICER


A driver, Omoyele James, who allegedly knocked down two policemen, was on Thursday hauled up before an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun.
James, 61, whose address is unknown, is being tried for manslaughter and reckless driving.
According to the prosecution, the accused drove his vehicle recklessly and killed two policemen — Cpl. Asafa Kamorudeen,30, and Cpl. Rotimi Ipinse,30 .
Cpl. Abdulkareem Mustapha said James committed the offence on May 15 at about 12.20 p.m. at Oke-Ore Village, Atan near Ota.
The accused drove a pickup with registration no. BDG 838 XP (Lagos) dangerously and killed the policemen, he told the court.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 5, 6 (1), 17 and 18 of the Federal Highway Act, Laws of Federation, 2006.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.O. Abimbola, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Abimbola said one of the sureties must own a developed landed property within the court’s jurisdiction.
In addition, she said the sureties should show evidence of one year tax payment and also submit recent passport photographs to the court.
The case was adjourned to Aug. 7 for hearing

One person was killed and three others wounded in a shooting inside a concert venue in New York City, where hip-hop artist T.I. was scheduled to perform, police said. It happened around 22:15 on Wednesday at Irving Plaza, near Manhattan's Union Square. Police said a 34-year-old man was shot in the chest and a 33-year-old man was shot in the stomach. One of the men later died at a hospital, police did not say which one. A 26-year-old woman was shot in the leg. Police said a fourth person walked into a hospital on their own. Elijah Rodriguez was attending the concert with his sister and they were in the VIP area by the stage. He said T.I. was supposed to go on stage at 21:00 or 21:30 but "he never showed up." At or around 22:00 he said the venue started playing music again, and at about 22:15, he saw a line of people coming out from where the performers were coming onstage.
