Egypt Sentence Ex-minister, 2 Sons For Corruption


Egypt's official news agency said a Cairo Criminal Court has convicted and sentenced former Information Minister Safwat el-Sharif and two of his sons for corruption to between five and 10 years in prison.
The MENA news agency reported on Saturday that el-Sharif and his son Ihab were each sentenced to five years. El-Sharif's second son, Ashraf, was sentenced to 10 years in absentia. The court fined all three a total of 209 million Egyptian pounds, about $24m.
The court said el-Sharif had abused his power and together with his sons illegally amassed huge amounts of money, along with real estate.
El-Sharif served as information minister and later as speaker of the parliament's upper chamber, or Shura Council.
He was close to deposed autocratic President Hosni Mubarak.

US father killed by carjackers while trying to protect two-year-old daughter

More than $300,000 has been raised on GoFund Me for the family of Gerard Grandzol, 38, who was gunned down in cold blood in front of his daughter a week ago in Philadelphia. Mr Grandzol, 38, took his toddler and dog on a family outing that included playing with a frisbee on September 8, according to Fox News. When he returned home in the evening, he was confronted by two men who demanded his wallet. They also wanted to take his car but, according to police, Mr Grandzol insisted on taking his two-year-old daughter out of it before giving the thieves the keys. Learner driver crushes woman to death

The Word of Faith Christian Centre, Kano, was thrown into mourning on Friday when a learner driver, Gloria Okocha, accidentally crushed another member of the church, Remi Nwokolor, to death. The tragedy took place at Nomansland, Sabon Gari, Kano. Our correspondent gathered that Okocha was trying to drive out of the church premises when she suddenly hit the victim before colliding against the wall of the church. A source, who witnessed the accident, said the collision attracted church members, who rushed to the scene and conveyed there. Nwokolor was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.Police officers from the Nomansland Police Station visited the scene of the accident. Security operatives impounded the Toyota jeep, while Okocha was detained at the police station. It was learnt that the remains of the deceased, had been deposited at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital morgue.
