Firefighter who evacuated hundreds on 9/11 dies of cancer

A former ferry captain who helped evacuate hundreds of people from Manhattan after the September 11 terror attacks has died.
Thomas Phelan was 45 and had cancer.
Phelan was a Statue of Liberty ferry captain in 2001. He helped evacuate Lower Manhattan and ferried rescue workers and supplies.
Two years after the attacks he became a firefighter assigned to a marine unit on Staten Island.
Family and friends told the New York Daily News they believe Phelan got cancer from toxic fumes at ground zero.
Scientific evidence linking the attacks to cancer is still unsettled. Researchers studying illnesses among people exposed to the 9/11 dust cloud have found an unusual number of deaths from brain malignancies and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, but fewer deaths than expected from other types of cancer

Woman with her baby, 2 others killed in Bomb explosion in Biu, Borno state Four persons including a woman and her baby have been confirmed dead in a bomb attack in Biu, Borno state this morning. According to a statement by the Nigerian Army, at about 8.15am today a tricycle, known as “Keke NAPEP” unknowingly stepped on an Improvise Explosive Device (IED) planted by the side of Biu -Damboa road close to a military checkpoint at the outskirts of Biu town, Borno State. Unfortunately, the IED exploded instantly killing 4 persons comprising of a woman with her baby and 2 other male adults. Three other persons were injured including a soldier and they were immediately evacuated to Biu General Hospital. We regret to state that the injured soldier also died at the hospital.
